NYU Pulse Dance Project: Senior Fall Showcase “OPULENCE”

This December, I had the opportunity to showcase my choreography at the NYU Pulse Dance Project’s fall showcase! The theme for this semester’s showcase was “Opulence,” and I danced in Thalia Shaw’s musical theatre jazz group dance. Every graduating student gets to perform a solo or duet in the fall or spring showcase, and I chose to perform my solo this semester! I choreographed a contemporary/ballet fusion dance to “Shake it Out” by Florence and the Machine.

This summer, I got to see Florence and the Machine in concert when I studied abroad in Athens, Greece, and it was an INCREDIBLE experience! She danced onstage with such free movement, and her joy to be back performing after COVID-19 was infectious. I took that energy from the concert and let it fuel my choreography. I felt like I was flying throughout the dance, and I felt my teammates’ support the entire time I was dancing.

The team also surprised me with flowers and a speech celebrating my years with the team! I have one more semester with the team, and I know this group will be one of the hardest goodbyes when I graduate early in the spring.

For next semester, I plan on choreographing a Pulse Project; a dance that is videotaped and screened during the spring showcase. I will be taking a Choreocinema course as an elective next semester, so I can’t wait to combine my love for dance and film together through this project. I will also lead some group fitness-style open dance classes next semester as I prepare to get certified in group fitness and yoga. Pulse for life!
